6'4" John Gavin was born in Los Angeles in 1928. His stunning good looks made him a favourite in Hollywood and he starred in two classic films released in 1960: Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho and Stanley Kubrick's Spartacus. In Spartacus, Gavin played a young Julius Caesar mentored by Charles Laughton's Gracchus. Inexplicably, Gavin's film career began to peter out in the early 60s and he was made American ambassador to Mexico. He also served on the board of the Screen Actors Guild for many years. After George Lazenby, Gavin was slated to play James Bond in Diamonds Are Forever. The role was eventually given back to Sean Connery but Gavin was still paid for the film.
one of my favorite of all times ever since I saw Hitchcock's "Psycho" !!! Right now I started a john Gavin DVD collection, I have seen 'Pas de roses pour OSS 117", and "Midnight lace" and I'm going to watch "Spartacus" !
ReplyDeleteHitchcock had no great love for Gavin, whom he felt could not act. A fact that was made clear by how little attention he was paid to by the famed director.
ReplyDeletethey even managed to reproduce that in the film HITCHCOCK with Anthony Hopkins.
Gavin was also in a very good film called "THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE", as wooden as ever, with Julie Andrews, Mary Tyler Moore, Beatrice Lillie and Carol Channing.
